The Godard Family Tree - mainly provided by Stuart Mackay & Bernice Mistrot
excerpts from The Goddard Book, John W. Harms, ed., Vol. 1, 1984, and Vol. 2, 1990
09 | John GODARD [c.1725-1753/57] mc. 1746 Anne Maria MASON [c.172-1763] John Godard was probably descended from a Huguenot family who came to England from France. Thus, the family may have lived in England for a number of generations before John's birth. John Godard may have been buried on 15 May 1757. Anne Maria Godard was a slopseller (seller of rough working dress ie: butchers aprons) at the time of her death and was buried on 22 March 1763. |

James Mason GODARD Sr. [1748-1836] mc.1777 Hannah POWELL [c.1754-1806] Notes: aged 52 years [information from St. Andrew's Church Register, Quebec City, Lower Canada] James Mason Godard was baptized on 26 December 1748, at St. Mary's Church at Rotherhithe. He was buried on 14 November 1836 in Halifax in the St. George's Churchyard. In 1802, Hannah's mother, Mrs. Powell, was living in Butt Lane, Deptford, Kent (which adjoins Rotherhithe, Surrey). With her were 2 unmarried daughters - Diana ("Diny" or "Di"), about age 45, and Sarah. Mr. Powell died when Diana was 16 (ca. 1772). There were all children. Another daughter (given name unknown) lived next door to Mrs. Powell in 1802, at the end of Butt Lane, with her husband, a Mr. Heath, a hatter. The Heaths had 9 children, of which - Bill (born ca. 1782), John (born ca. 1784), Harriet (born ca. 1789) and Frances. The Heaths and Powells moved to Deptford after the family of James Mason Godard left England, but it is not known where the Powells came from. Hannah Powell and James Mason Godard had several children: |

John Stoddard GODARD [1784-1862] m.1812 Ann Catherine VIETH [1788-1829] The following is taken from an autobiography that John Godard wrote when he was 73 years old. The original is three hand-written volumes, location unknown. Only the first volume has been typed: "My father was a Brewer, and had a very handsome property left him by his grandfather, by whom he was brought up, together with a brother and two sisters, they having lost both their parents in the same year, my father being only five years of age when that melancholy event took place. According to the chronicles of my family, I first saw the light on the 22nd June, 1783 [sic]. No doubt you know, gentle reader, as well as myself, that June is called the crab month, and I verily believe that the crooked legged animal was ascending at the time of my birth, for all my affairs have gone backwards; I was the fourth of a hopeful progeny of six, having a brother and two sisters before me. My brother, poor fellow, was something like myself in point of good luck, for I do not think either of us has as much as would cover a sixpence. The next was Maria, the most fortunate of all the family, then beloved Hannah, another June bird with just about as much luck as myself, all her affairs having gone just about as straight as a dog's hind leg, and is now living somewhere in Upper Canada as poor as a Church mouse. My native place was called Rotherhithe in the County of Surrey, my father's brewery stood on the banks of the Thames, and quite within the sound of the great Bell at Bow, so I am what they call a hedge cockney. ... My father, poor man, was twice ruined by fire, which was the chief cause of his immigrating to Canada, which took place in the spring of the year 1790. ..." |

Elizabeth Powell GODARD [1788-1787] m.1806 Cyprian BRIDGE [1784-1843] Note: Cyprian Bridge was made a Gentleman Cadet on 8 October 1798. He became a 2nd Lieutenant on 20 December 1800. He became a 2nd Captain on 1 February 1808 and a Captain on 24 March 1817. He was on 1/2 pay from 1 April 1817 to 16 July 1823. He became a Major in the Royal Artillery on 27 May 1825. He became a Lieutenant Colonel on 4 June 1836. He retired on full pay on 1 April 1841. He served with the Royal Artillery in Canada from 1802‑1815 (Niagara, 1813), the Netherlands and France from 1815 to 1816, and on the Expedition to Portugal from 1826‑1828. He was the youngest son among 15 brothers and sisters. He is buried in Harwich, Essex, England. His parents were Cyprian Bridge who was Chamberlain of Harwich, Essex and his mother was Sarah Phillips. They may have originated from Harwich. The following is from a letter written by Roger Peacham (Local Studies Asst., Gloucestershire County Council, Cheltenham Library) to Mr. G. Bell in San Francisco, dated 31 March 1989: "The local directories of 1842‑43 list Lt. Col Bridge at 10 Promenade Terrace, Cheltenham. This stands in a fashionable part of the town, now one of the principal shopping streets. The house has since been re‑numbered as 117 The Promenade. A simple announcement of death appeared in the Cheltenham Examiner of 10th January, 1844, 'died 31st December at his residence, 10 Promenade Terrace in this town, in his 60th year, Lt.‑Col. Cyprian Bridge, on the retired full pay of the Royal Regiment of Artillery." The Promenade is in the Anglican parish of S. Mary the virgin whose records are held by the County Archivist, County Records Office, Worcester St., Goucester, Gl1 3DW."
